What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a mechanical keyboard? Expensive? For gaming? Extremely satisfying typing sounds?
Yes, yes and yes, but there is also still so much more to them then just being fancy gaming keyboards. The definition of a mechanical keyboard mainly lies right below the keys, the individual switches that registers each keystrokes.
So what are the main reasons that put mechanical keyboards over a regular one?
- Durability: This is one of the main concerns for most people trying to buy a good keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are way more durable compared to the regular ones regardless of manufacturer, because of the switches that they use are certified to be longer lasting than the regular keyboards.
- Key Rollover: This represents the amount of of keys you can press at once and still be registered by the keyboard, the most common levels of key rollover for mechanical keyboards are 6KRO and NKRO (N being unlimited). While most regular keyboards came with 2KRO or 3KRO. High KRO is useful for high speed typing and gaming.
- Click-Clack: Arguably the most iconic feature of mechanical keyboards, the sounds they make when you're pressing on the keys, it might seem like an inconsequential thing for keyboards but when asked why they buy mechanical keyboards, most people are sure to include the love of the click-clacking sound as a core reason. In my experience, the sounds of a mechanical keyboard are really satisfying, soothing even, in some cases, that's why there are even ASMR videos made based on mechanical keyboards.
- Feel: This is a rather ambiguous thing to discuss but in general, it does feel as if it is easier to type on a mechanical keyboard and the keystrokes seem that much more fluid too. That paired with the satisfying sounds it makes when you're typing just makes it so satisfying.
Conclusion: mechanical keyboards are indeed better than regular keyboards, but regular keyboards should suffice for most needs, mechanical keyboards are more luxury goods than practical tools but in the end, it is all up to how much you really want to spend on your PC peripherals, which is a reason why mechanical keyboards are mostly marketed to PC gamers.
