Netflix's Ultraman anime just came out, and honestly, I was not expecting this. Let's talk slight about the premise of this anime, which is pretty much unlike all the previous Ultraman TV series I remember watching as a child.
1. It is a 3D anime. not the life-action series we loved from our childhood.
At first, I was pretty at odds with the choice to use 3D animation for this, because 3D animation is so hard to get right and honestly, in the first episode, I was not completely sold on the animation, because truly it reminds me of the cut-scenes we see in the slightly dated games, but in episode 4, I realized that this creative decision is probably to allow more life-like action scenes, because from the few fight scenes I've seen, I see the people fighting using real-life martial arts (that I've seen on TV), like grappling, wrestling, Judo? I don't really know, but the action scenes are pretty fluid, to my surprise, since I've never really been much of a fan of 3D anime, but it's pretty ok for Netflix's Ultraman.
2. The Ultraman is human-sized??
I mean, I've always wondered what would happen if the opponents that Ultraman has to face are like, y'know, human-sized, would he just step on them and be done with it? Or would he fight them as a human, manage to beat them, and then they go mega size and he transforms into Ultraman (This might've happened but I don't remember...also, that might be the Power Rangers), well, that question is no more! Because now (at ep4 so far), Ultraman is basically Black Panther with Ultraman's signature Spacium Ray.
3. The flashing red light is actually a limiter release??
THE AGE OLD QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED! The beeping red light is not a "I'm dying" indicator, but a limiter release. Makes a whole lot of sense, to be honest, why else would Ultraman only defeat monsters when it is beeping?
That's all I have for the first impression, to be honest and completely unbiased, I am mainly drawn to this anime because of nostalgia, but I will still watch this to the end. All in all, the twist in the settings for Ultraman makes it seem a bit cliched, but still enjoyable, the action scenes have been pretty great so far too.
